Course outline

What is the course about?

This is a hands-on ceramics class which covers all the making techniques, including glazing and simple glaze mixing. It is open to the complete beginner and to the more advanced and experienced student. You will be able to develop a visual and practical awareness and increase your overall perception of pottery and ceramics. This is based on learning all the basic skills required in making ceramics and applying the discipline in developing a creative and personal approach.

What topics will we cover?

You will be taught the range of making skills week by week, so that you become familiar with the variety of techniques that go towards making ceramics. The basic making skills, decorative process involving slip and glazes will also be covered, so at the end of the introductory period you should have the knowledge and skills to work independently and in a more personal way.

Everyone will be involved in running the workshop as part of our policy of taking students, step by step, through as many ceramic processes as are appropriate to the course, and with a concern for health and safety.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Beginner:
- Use skills and techniques relevant to all the making processes.
- Design and make pots using personal ideas.
- Understand the decorative and finishing aspects of glazes.
- Work with clay and glaze confidently and creatively.

Intermediate/advanced:
- Further develop your personal ideas.
- Set further goals in discussion with the tutor.
- Practise and improve your skills in making ceramic forms.
- Be aware of and work to health and safety guidelines.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is aimed at all levels and is open to anybody with an interest in working with clay. No previous experience is necessary.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Group and individual demonstrations supported by discussions and visual references, but mainly learning by doing. Working at home with visual ideas is optional.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You may want to purchase your own tools. Advice will be given by the tutor during the course. All work has to be paid for prior to being fired (£1.50 per 500g). You will be expected to show good workshop practice and follow the health and safety guidelines.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
