Course outline

What is the course about?

This ceramics course is an opportunity for students with some experience to improve their throwing skills, and for beginners to learn the basic skills and techniques of making thrown pots. As well as throwing forms and turning, you will have the chance to develop shapes and experiment with constructions, as well as working on a larger scale. You will also find out slip, oxide and glaze decoration techniques.

What topics will we cover?

We will cover all the basic making processes, including clay preparation and simple shape forming – bowls, vases, mugs, jugs and lidded forms. Coloured slip and oxide decoration will be introduced. There will be an opportunity for those interested to experiment further with throwing and assembling.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Beginners:
• Demonstrate a level of skill and understanding of the principles of throwing.
• Make a lidded form.
• Mix clays to produce a piece of agate ware.
• Throw a 'bellied' form.
• Decorate and glaze pieces.

Intermediate/advanced:
• Set further goals in discussion with the tutor.
• Further develop and refine your personal ideas.
• Practise and improve your throwing skills.
• Evaluate your work.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is open to anybody with an interest in throwing, from complete beginners to more experienced students who want to develop their skills further.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

By group and individual demonstrations supported by discussions and one-to-one tuition, as well as visual references, books, ceramic examples and handouts.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There will be a charge of £1.50 per pound of clay fired. There are tools available to use within the department, but you may want to purchase your own as the course progresses.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
