This four-day taster Pottery course in Throwing introduces you to the basic techniques of throwing clay on the potter’s wheel to make finished pots.
This course develops basic throwing skills using clay on an electric potters wheel. You will have hands on experience of the throwing process, and cover the basic elements, to make functional pieces of work. Through learning how to prepare the clay, centre and pull up the clay, you will be able to create mugs and jugs, as well as open forms, such as bowls and plates. You will be shown how to use ceramic decorating materials and how to glaze the work produced. You will be shown a variety of pottery forms and designs in order to develop your own ideas about pottery shapes.
As part of the course you will be encouraged to keep a sketchbook to collect and note down your ideas and observations.
• You will be able to create sketches of a pottery form
• You will learn how to make functional pieces, such as cups, bowls or a plate (this may not be decorated or fired if made in weeks 3 and 4 of the course).
• You will know how to make a foot ring on a bowl
• You will learn how to attach handles to clay work
• You will decorate and finish your work using ceramic decoration materials and glazes
• You will understand how lids are made and fitted.
This course is ideal for beginners and those who might also have experience working with clay who are wishing to learn how to throw.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
You will be taught through group and one to one tuition and demonstrations; handouts and hands on practice.
There is a charge for clay @ £1.50 per 500g before work is fired. There is a communal pottery tool box for all students to use.
No.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
