This short course is for beginners who would like to try the basic pottery techniques of hand building and throwing. Kiln firing will be briefly explained and a number of pieces can be fired at the end of the course.
The aim of this course is to introduce basic pottery techniques. You will learn to make work by coiling, slab building, pinching and throwing. You will be shown simple surface decoration techniques and apply them to the forms you make.
You will be able to select a number of pieces of your work to be fired at the end of course and a time will be arranged to pick work up.
- Make simple forms using the techniques of:
- coiling
- slab building
- pinching
- throwing
- Decorate the forms with coloured slips and underglazes.
This course is for newcomers to pottery.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your tutor will give you regular feedback both individually and through group discussion.
