Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is aimed at those students who have previously done a pottery course. It will give you the chance to broaden your existing knowledge and develop new skills. There will be projects to follow that will enable you to expand your skills in pottery: throwing, hand building, surface decoration and glazing. The more independent advanced students will be encouraged to further develop personal ideas and styles of making.

What topics will we cover?

We will cover various fundamental techniques for making ceramics: hand building, throwing and surface decoration at intermediate level. New skills of glazing and firing will be taught. In addition, we will cover ways of developing and expressing personal ideas throughout the classes. Develop ideas and skills through visual research translating this into making your ideas. Alongside this you with be sharing inspiration with others.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Make work to an intermediate level using slab building and press moulding techniques.
- Show a refinement of your existing knowledge of glazes
- Show improvements in the methods of decorating your work.
- Give your work a more professional look and improve the quality of finish.

More advanced student will be able to:
- Set the parameters for their own project
- Work independently with the support of a professional tutor.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for intermediate students so you should have some previous experience of ceramics and be open to learning new skills and techniques

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and best practice, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through practical demonstration, group and individual tuition, discussions, Powerpoint and handouts.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There will be a cost of £1.50 per 500g of clay before the first firing.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
