Course outline

What is the course about?

This course will link textiles and ceramics, to develop ways of bringing personal ideas out of the sketchbook onto ceramic functional objects.

It will enable you to use textile ideas and develop them in a number of ways onto functional tiles, buttons, china plates and cups which will be made permanent through firing.

What topics will we cover?

You will be introduced to methods of using textile materials as a means to emboss, inlay and imprint ceramic surfaces to create surface decoration. This will also teach you about ceramic processes. Your personal ideas will be explored and used to design motifs, patterns and textures for functional items such as tiles, buttons, plates, cups and saucers.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• Compile a sketchbook of ideas for ceramic design purposes.
• Understand how 2D material can be refined for design purposes.
• Use a variety of printing, fabric embossing, inlaying, reproducing and collaging methods to achieve ceramic designs.
• Understand the sequence of ceramic processes.
• Use surface decoration in a personal innovative way.
• Build a relationship between textiles and ceramics.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is aimed at beginners to ceramics and at those at an intermediate level in ceramics and textiles who might have an interest in exploring textural possibilities provided by textiles and an interest in linking areas of practice.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to understand demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. You will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to do simple cost calculations for materials used and be able to do simple visual measurements.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught in groups and through one-to-one discussion, demonstration and practice.
No specific work will be required outside of the class but you may want to collect materials for your use.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to bring a sketchbook for ideas and a supply of resource materials such as textured natural fabrics, and a variety of textural natural and man-made materials. Clay will be charged at £1.50 per 500g before the first firing.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
