Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is an introduction to developing 3D design ideas using a computer. The SketchUp Pro software is very user-friendly and enables wonderful perspectve drawings. It is ideal for planning interior design projects and proposals, but can also be used for modelling objects and outdoor spaces. The SketchUp Pro 7 software is sufficiently adapatable to be relevent for the home enthusiast and professionals alike.

What topics will we cover?

We will cover various techniques to create different shapes relating to all aspects of interiors. Each session there will be a demonstration of a particular aspect of SketchUp Pro 7, projected onto a large screen so that all students will have simultaneous access to the information. This is followed by an exercise, allowing for some individual tutorial support. Periodically there will be forum sessions were we will look at each other’s work to discuss different aspects of the programme. Asking questions and commenting is encouraged at all times. Handouts relating to the course content are available. Safe studio practice, including setting up workstations, saving files, the safe use of equipment and clearing away equipment will be part of the session.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Create 3D images directly on the computer
- Visualise the model from different view points
- Introduce textures and finishes
- Incorporate simple shadows
- Save the model as an image
- Prepare images for printing.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

We will introduce all students to SketchUp Pro 7, but you will need to come with a basic understanding of computer use and manipulating a computer mouse. You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

We will work on Apple Macbook Pro laptop computers with software Google SketchUp Pro 7. You will be shown how to obtain free versions of this software for use at home on PC and Macintosh computers. The course consists of discussions and demonstrations and one-to-one personal projects.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You need to purchase a USB memory stick of 2GB to collect and keep your data safe. Other basic materials will be provided.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
