Vectorworks is a multi-disciplinary computer aided design program appealing to professionals, students and keen home enthusiasts. This course focuses on how to use Vectorworks to create and develop 2D drawings and plans. You will be taught on a Mac but the program also works on a PC. Tutor: Nicholas Williamson.

Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is an introduction to developing 3D design ideas using a computer. The software is very user-friendly and it is ideal for planning interior design projects, architectural planning, 3D modelling and landscaping. This course is of industry standard. The software is sufficiently adapatable to be relevent for the home enthusiast and professionals alike.

What topics will we cover?

The course will cover how to set up a drawing correctly, the use of the various 2D drawing toold to do professional plans and evaluations, and how to effectively access and use the built-in symbol library plus how to bring together the entire project for a final presentation print.

Periodically, there will be forum sessions were we all look at each other's work to discuss different aspects of the programme. Asking questions and commenting is encouraged at all times. Handouts relating to the course content are available. Safe studio practice, including setting up workstations, saving files, safe use of equipment and clearing away equipment will be part of the session.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Create 2D plans and elevations
- Insertion of door and window symbols
- Adding dimensions to your drawing
- Applying different fill options to 2D shapes
- Use of layers and classes
- Putting together drawing for final presentation and printing.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

We will introduce all students to Vectorworks, but you will need to come with a basic understanding of computer use and manipulating a computer mouse.You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

We will work on Apple Macbook Pro laptop computers with the Vectorworks software. You will be shown how to obtain free versions of this software for use at home on PC and Macintosh computers. The course consists of discussions and demonstrations and one-to-one personal projects.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You need to purchase a USB memory stick of 2GB to collect and keep your data safe. Other basic materials will be provided.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
