Ideal for beginners, the aim of this course is to introduce an outline of contemporary garden design, focusing on the development of an urban garden. You will learn the principals behind good design with a look at a wide range of contemporary garden styles. By the end of the course you will have an insight into current design thinking and how to successfully present a garden design project to clients.
You will learn about design principals and be shown how the practical aspects of the design process work from basic surveying, creating concept plans and mood boards to basic planting design, specifications and budgets. You will be shown through the stages of a project from concept to presentation, putting this into practice by undertaking and presenting your own small garden design project working to our brief.

- Have an insight into hard landscaping materials and planting design
- Have gained an awareness of sourcing materials & plants
- Understand the skills required to further your interest in garden design
- follow good studio practice.
No previous experience is necessary. This course is for anyone with an interest in garden design.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, handouts and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your
English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
A mixture of lectures, and practical work on individual projects and informal group discussions. This
course will include a visit to a garden.
Basic materials and equipment are provided. You should bring A3 graph paper, scale ruler, pencil, eraser, ink ballpoint for final plan, compass. You need to bring £7 entrance fee plus transport cost to the garden.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
