This is a broad introduction to the art of puppetry. We will look at a range of different styles of puppet manipulation and learn some basic construction techniques. You will make a rod puppet with a carved head and simple joints. There will be opportunities to experiment with puppet performance techniques. We will also look at the work of a range of puppet theatre companies.

Suitable for all abilities. This is a general introduction to puppetry. Puppetry taps into a wide range of skills from technical to theatrical so a willingness to explore all areas of the art form is beneficial.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
By working individually, in pairs and small groups with a mixture of practical demonstrations and exercises, group observation and individual making projects. Also looking at films of other puppeteers’ work.
