This course will introduce students to Maya, one of the most widely used 3D professional computer software animation packages.
The digital arts studio is equipped with industry standard hardware and software. Apple Mac computers are used, but most of what is taught is also applicable to a Windows environment: tutors will explain differences. You may wish to take our 3 hour single session Introduction to using Apple computers for visual arts work first if you are more used to the Windows operating system.
The course will examine the different modules of Maya
It will discuss production techniques, pipelines, and will give a detailed making of of various feature films like White Noise and Mirror Mask, plus TV movies like the BBCs Snow Queen (by Hans Christian Andersen) and Death in holy orders (by P.D. James).
The course will also cover various small, hands on projects like modelling, texturing and animating a character.
- an initial overview of Mayas interface and modules:
modelling, animation, dynamics and rendering.
- an insight into the world of 3d animation and Visual Effects
- practical experience of using Maya at a basic first steps&#.
The course is intended for individuals who have a background or strong interest in design, visual effects and animation , but no prior knowledge of Maya.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
Communicative, functional approach with emphasis on hands on work with Maya plus industry examples outlining the technical and creative challenges. Methods include individual and group practice, books and videos are provided. Some homework is encouraged if practical.
