Course outline

What is the course about?

This is an experimental course and aims to take you beyond the intermediate level. Some of this will revolve around images that have problems and need correcting. Other aspects will involve artistic interpretation and experimentation.

What topics will we cover?

Paths and Alpha Channels, Clipping and Stroking Paths, Adjustment Layers, Layer Masks, Blending modes, advanced text options, Curves for optimum tonal range and colour control, Photoshop Preferences, Layer Styles, Layer Groups and Layer Comps, Actions, Batch Actions and Droplets, Colour Management.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Make Vector (Paths) based Selections and place text on a Path.
- Produce alterations using Adjustment layers, and Blending modes.
- Use Layer Masks, Clipping Masks, Clipping Paths, Layer Comps and Layer Styles
- Automate alterations using Batch Actions.
- Output using a colour managed workflow for web and print.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

It is imperative that everyone already has a reasonable understanding of Photoshop. You might have already been to another Photoshop course at The City Lit. The course will use Version CS4 Extended on Macintosh Computers. It will be a benefit if you already have a fair understanding of the Mac but Windows users are in the majority and differences (which are few) will be explained when appropriate. At the very least you should have an understanding of Photoshop Layers and Selections.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course structure is also flexible. Lectures, and practical demonstrations encourage a hands-on approach to solving problems.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Handouts will be given to accompany some of the lectures and demonstrations. Recommended reading for this course is Photoshop for Photographers by Martin Evening.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Your tutor will give you feedback both individually and through group discussion.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 201 of the 10-11 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You may like to do another digital arts course at the City Lit.
