Course outline

What is the course about?

Each week, two participants will show/share their own projects in class. We will look at it and discuss it in detail. Learn to deal with commonly encountered problems in narrative construction, sequencing and presentation from watching and discussing other people’s projects. We will use the group-setting to gain and give feed-back and to look at work in a supportive and critically informed way.

What topics will we cover?

We will look at different aspects of editing mainly in response to material brought by fellow students. On occasion the tutor will demonstrate specialist editing techniques in class. We will use either Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere depending on the needs of the individual. Aspects of AfterEffects or Photoshop may be/can be included.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Digitize your material into Final Cut
- Output a final movie to tape/disc
- Identify an aspect of your own work in progress that needs changing
- Offer one or different solutions for this change in your own work.
- Find some ways to change/improve your own project.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an advanced course and it is necessary to have completed at least a beginner’s level editing class. You will work on your own material, mainly outside of class. You need to be motivated and committed to your own work.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Each week one or two people will present their project. Through guided discussion we will identify strengths and weaknesses in the presentation and the project and find ways to improve them.
Depending on the requirements of the group there may be short exercises or demonstrations. The bulk of sessions will concentrate on each individual’s work, and ways to understand and improve it. Individual tutorial time is incorporated into the individual presentation time, as is peer discussion and review. Handbooks, manuals and worksheets are available.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You may want to purchase removable storage to collect and keep your data safe, though you will have your own account in class where you can accumulate your work from week to week.
You might also want to consider purchasing other books related to the subject of film making and editing. We will also provide you with a range of handouts and you can make use of books in the library.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will also have peer-reviews and be part of an overall culture of sharing feedback. A written report can be obtained on request.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

We do not offer further video-editing courses after this level, but you could try a specialised After Effects, Sound-editing or Photoshop class, or go and join one of the theoretical film classes.
