Course outline

What is the course about?

Learn how to produce dynamic animated graphics and special effects with this exciting professional package. You will learn how to prepare images in Photoshop, animate them in After Effects in both 2D and 3D incorporating animated effects. Work will be exported as QuickTime movies.

What topics will we cover?

Session 1. View and discuss work. Prepare still images for use in After Effects. Using Photoshop we will scan select and create transparent backgrounds for still images. Introduction to creating new projects in After Effects and importing files. Introduction to animating transformations in 2D.
Session 2. Creating and modifying paths and making objects follow paths. Introduction to the use of layers in a multi layered composition.
Session 3. Animating transformations in 3D. Introduction to working with more than one composition on the same project to create dynamic compositions.
Session 4. Creatively animating filters and effects.
Session 5. Completing projects,viewing work, rendering movies and burning DVDs.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

-Have a basic understanding of how to create transparent areas of images in photoshop
-Apply an awareness of setting compositions
-Use transformations in After Effects in both 2D and 3D
-Set and use keyframes (keypoints) for animation
-Work with multiple layers
-Select and apply effects
-Have a basic understanding of how to render projects as quicktime movies.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory course. You don't need any experience in using After Effects but you should have some experience of using a computer. You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstrations, class discussions, individual assistance and notes.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

You can develop your work further on the Introduction to After Effects and Producing Animated Titles course VG258. If you’d like to develop your animation skills you could follow a range of animation courses at City lit in Flash and Stop Motion animation. You will also be able to progress to and gain more from higher level course in Multi-media, Animation or the Digital Moving Image.
