Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is designed for students, teachers, designers and textile artists who would like to investigate the creative potential of computers in textile design. While learning Photoshop, we explore colour, texture and pattern.

What topics will we cover?

The course covers: painting and drawing on screen; creating patterns and textures; scanning images and fabric samples; collage, photomontage and image manipulation; repeat pattern and colourways; file management and saving of digital designs; and printing possibilities for textiles - on paper and cloth.

You will work to a project of your choice, relating to your own work or favoured theme, with guidance from the tutor.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Produce a portfolio of textile designs as a body of digitally saved work for future development
- Produce some designs as prints on paper
- Feel confident and competent in using a computer and Photoshop for textile design
- Feel challenged to take design work further in the future.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Beginners are welcome at this introductory level. Working in Photoshop, you are encouraged to develop your own design work at your own pace. If you already have some knowledge of the programme you can work at your own level.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The programme will be taught through demonstration and helpful guidance. Technical assistance will be available. The course is structured progressively over four days. Computers are Macintosh, with Photoshop compatible to PC.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Books can be recommended but are not essential purchases. Printing costs are covered on the course. You will need to buy CDs for storing your work at the advice of the tutor.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. At the end of each session, time will be given for discussion and to recap on what has been covered and what to prepare for the following session.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
