Course outline

What is the course about?

This course will help learners gain better English skills in preparation for studies in Art & Design. Students will gain sketchbook and video skills whilst also gaining a nationally recognised literacy qualification.

What topics will we cover?

All students will work to a set video project under guidance of their tutors. The course will cover how to use a sketchbook to record ideas. You will learn how to take an idea further by using a worksheet to plan and organize a video shoot. You will then learn how to film your idea using a digital video camera and edit the footage using IMovie editing software. Everyone will transfer their work onto a DVD that can be played back on a DVD player.

Students will participate in group discussions and will be encouraged to talk about their ideas and the progress of their work.

During the course there will also be a gallery visit to help gain inspiration for your ideas.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- To use a sketchbook to record ideas
- To use a worksheet to plan an idea for a digital video.
- Understand the basic principles required to use a digital video camera
- Understand how to input video footage onto a computer
- Edit footage and add sound and effects.
- Transfer footage to other media i.e., DVD
- Read and analyse variety of art related texts
- Plan, write and proofread own writing.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for beginners (people new to Art and Design) but you will be expected to have some basic knowledge of computers. You should also be able to express your ideas clearly when speaking, read topic related texts and write a few paragraphs.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will have demonstrations and lectures as well as individual tutorials and group work. You will be set practical exercises. The digital arts studio is equipped with industry standard hardware and software. Apple Mac computers are used, but most of what is taught is also applicable to a Windows environment: tutors will explain differences. You may wish to take our 3 hour single session Introduction to using Apple computers for visual arts work first if you are more used to the Windows operating system.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You are advised to purchase your own A5 sketchbook and an A5 lined journal or notebook. Worksheets, pencils and rulers will be supplied. DVD costs are also covered on the course.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
