Course outline

What is the course about?

For beginners who have an interest in learning about the Internet and designing their own website. This course will give you an introduction to the concepts and practical skills necessary.
The digital arts studio is equipped with industry standard hardware and software. Apple Mac computers are used, but most of what is taught is also applicable to a Windows environment: tutors will explain differences. You may wish to take our 3 hour single session Introduction to using Apple computers for visual arts work first if you are more used to the Windows operating system.

What topics will we cover?

Basic web design using Dreamweaver. Image file formats for the web. Preparing Images for the Web, Simple animation techniques in Dreamweaver and Flash, Making Flash buttons in Dreamweaver - Adding Meta tags. - How to upload your site to the Internet.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Create a simple website consisting of two or more linked pages containing text and images.
A basic understanding of Dreamweaver and Flash for the Web.
Ability to optimise images for the Web
Add Meta tags and descriptions
Understanding the potential of designing for the web
Understand how to upload a simple website onto some Webspace.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a beginners class but students are required to be computer literate at a basic level. Please note that you will be using Apple Macs, (although all the software used on this course is cross platform).

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstrations with practical exercises and handouts. and general supervision. Each student will have their own workstation which are all on-line.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No, but a list of recommended further reading will be provided on the course.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
