Introduction to After Effects and producing animated titles

Learn to dynamically manipulate text and image to produce animated title sequences and short adverts. You will use Photoshop, After Effects and other packages currently used for broadcast productions. The work you produce can be used to seek commissions in the industry.

Course outline

What is the course about?

Learn to use the animation tools and techniques in After Effects to produce professional title sequences and animated graphics. You will work in creating transformations on text and image in both virtual 2D and 3D and enhance your sequences through the use of animated effects, camera and lights.

What topics will we cover?

- Preparing images in photoshop and importing them into projects in AEFX.
- Transforming images and animating these transformations in both 2D and 3D.
- Applying a range of effects to moving and still images
- Applying animated virtual lights and cameras to produce dynamic compositions.
- Creating and animating text and making text follow a path.
- Exporting projects as movies.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- prepare still images for use in After Effects.
- import moving and still image files
- create keyframes
- animate transformations
- animate filters and effects.
- create and animate text
- create and animate masks
- animate transformations in 3D
- create and animate lights
- create and animate cameras.
- export projects as movies.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory course. You do not need any experience in using After Effects but you do need to have some basic experience of using a computer.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstrations, practical exercises and projects, individual guidance and notes. There will be no work set for outside the class, though practice outside the class is encouraged as it will help improve your progress.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No additional costs. Notes will be provided.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

You will be able to develop your animation and skills in courses such as 'Animation using the Computer' which uses Flash and 'Creative Animation' which uses a range of techniques and applications. You can find these courses in the CityLit prospectus or website.
