This course encourages experimentation. It aims to take you beyond the intermediate level and get you using some of the more advanced techniques in Photoshop with confidence. Some of this will revolve around images that have problems and need correcting. Other aspects will involve artistic interpretation and experimentation.

What topics will we cover?

You will find out about the following tools and techniques, and learn how to use them to create the effects you want:
- paths and alpha channels
- alpha based selections
- clipping and stroking paths
- adjustment layers and blending modes
- layer masks, vector masks and smart objects
- displacement maps and vanishing point
- advanced text options
- smart objects
- curves for optimum tonal range and colour control
- Photoshop preferences
- layer styles, layer groups and layer comps
- actions and batch actions,
- droplets
- colour management and soft proofing
- displacement maps
- Raw files, high dynamic range files and stacks
- uses of the Adobe 'Bridge' application.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Make vector- (paths) based selections and place text on a path.
- Make alpha channel based selections
- Produce alterations using adjustment layers and blending modes.
- Use layer masks, clipping masks, clipping paths, layer comps and layer styles
- Use vector masks and smart objects
- Use vanishing point and displacement maps
- Soft proof image
- Process Raw files, high dynamic files and stacks
- Automate alterations using batch actions
- Edit, rate and add meta data from within Bridge
- Output using a colour managed workflow for web and print.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

It is important that everyone already has a reasonable understanding of Photoshop. You might have already been to another Photoshop course at City Lit. The course will will be taught on Macintosh computers. It will help if you already have a fair understanding of the Mac, but the differences (which are few) for Windows users will be explained when appropriate. At the very least you should have an understanding of Photoshop layers and selections.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course structure is flexible. Lectures, practical demonstrations and individual assistance encourage a hands-on approach to solving problems. There is no work outside the class but you are encouraged to practice the techniques you have learnt.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No additional costs. Handouts will be given to accompany some of the lectures and demonstrations. You may like to buy some reference books to compliment your learning on the course, Recommended reading for this course is Photoshop for Photographers by Martin Evening.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
