Combining the traditional methods of drawn and cut-out animation with computer techniques, you will make short animations using Flash. This is the application of choice for creating animations for both film and the web. All levels welcome.

This course uses the application Flash to introduce you to the traditional and experimental techniques of drawn and cut-out animation.
Session 1: View and discuss examples of animation. Introduction to the drawing tools of Flash. Introduction to creating key frames. Exercise in drawn frame by frame animation.
Session 2: Using frame by frame animation to create short animated sequence.
Session 3: Drawing on film using the animation technique of creative rotascoping.
Session 4: Intro to and exercises in animating changes of shape using shape tweening
Session 5: Intro to and exercises in animating changes in position and scale using classic tweening and combining it with shape tweening.
Session 6: Intro to creating and using animated symbols.
Session 7: Creating animated transformations in 3D using motion tweens and animating objects along a path.
Session 8: Preparing photos in Photoshop for animation in Flash. Intro to importing and animating photographic images
Session 9: Animating photographic images using motion tweens across different layers
Session10: Importing and synching sound. Burn CD’s.
- By the end of this course you should be able to:
- Use the drawing tools in Flash
- Create drawn animations using keyframes
- Create animations using shape tweening to animate changes in shape
- Create animations using motion tweening to animate transformations
- Understand how to prepare photographic images for use in Flash
- Import and animate photographic images in Flash
- Import sound and synch sound to animation in Flash
- Export animated sequences as QuickTime movies.
This is an introductory course. You do not need to have any experience in animation or in the application Flash. You do need to have some basic experience of using a computer. You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple and calculations. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
Demonstrations, practical exercises and projects, individual guidance and notes. There will be no work set for outside the class, though practice outside the class is encouraged as it will help improve your progress.
