Starting with basic skills and quickly moving onto more in-depth techniques, this course provides a thorough foundation into Photoshop. You will learn to exploit its extensive range of creative features and tools. Each lesson is designed to provide you with maximum opportunities for hands-on skills development. Through a combination of interactive demonstrations and constructive practical tasks you will explore your creative potential and produce original, eye catching designs. You will get the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to design and produce original artwork based on a specified brief.

- Imaginative methods of layer manipulation for collaging.
- Applying a wide variety of special effects and styles to digital images.
- Incorporating text as a visual element to enhance a design.
- Visual blending for manipulating tone and colour.
- Defining, refining and editing selections.
- Engaging imaginative approaches to enhancing your images.
- Working with masks to hide and reveal areas of an image.
- Applying colour and tonal adjustments to digital images.
- Experimenting with photographs or scanned work.
- Using shapes and vectors for illustrative results.
- Techniques for stripping down images as graphics.
- Importing images using a scanner.
- Saving images for print and web output.
- All students will work on individual design projects under guidance from the tutor.
- A City Lit Certificate will be awarded on successful completion of design projects.
- Use the selection tools to isolate areas of an image.
- Construct and manage multi-layered images.
- Incorporate, edit and format text using the Type tools.
- Utilise a variety of tools to edit localised areas.
- Apply colour adjustments to digital images.
- Apply a range of special effects and filters to images.
- Design original work from a specified brief.
This course is intended for beginners, although students with some basic experience of Photoshop or those who wish to gain a certificate may also find it useful. Students should already have a good understanding of using a computer for word-processing. . If you have never used a Mac computer before, you might find our course ‘An introduction to Apple computers’ that runs each term useful.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
The course structure consists of demonstrations, discussions and practical exercises. Students will be given the opportunity to produce original designs based on a set design brief. One to one guidance and support will be given throughout.
Books will be recommended but are not essential purchases. Printing costs are covered on the course. A CD-R will also be provided for storing work.
