Course outline

What is the course about?

Learn how to use Flash to animate drawn and cut out characters. Enjoy developing your animation skills and creating short witty animated sequences. No previous experience necessary.

What topics will we cover?

Session 1: Viewing and discussing examples of animation. Introduction to the drawing tools of Flash. Introduction to creating keyframes. Exercise in drawn, frame-by-frame animation using keyframes and 'onion skinning'. Introduction to using layers.
Session 2: Introduction to preparing images in Photoshop, importing cut out images to Flash and animating transformations using 'motion tweening'. Intro to creating paths and making images follow paths.
Session 3: Introduction to creating animated symbols and using them on multi layered scenes.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• use the drawing tools of Flash
• understand keyframes, blank keyframes and onion skinning as they’re used in creating animated sequences.
• understand the use of layers
• prepare and import images into Flash using Photoshop
• use motion tweening to animate transformations.
• create animated symbols and bring them into scenes
• create short animated sequences.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory course. You do not need experience in animation or Flash but you do need some basic experience of using a computer.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstrations, individual assistance and notes.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
