Course outline

What is the course about?

For beginners who have an interest in learning about the internet and designing their own web page and site. This course will give you a thorough introduction to the concepts and practical skills necessary.

What topics will we cover?

- How to select a domain name and web host
- Use Dreamweaver CS4 to build simple web pages
- What is HTML and the basic HTML structure
- What is CSS and how to create CSS to style HTML structures
- Use Photoshop CS4 to prepare images for the web
- The basic steps to planning a website.
- How to optimise your web pages for Search Engines
- Create a simple image gallery
- Embed video to a web page
- Upload the website to a server.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Use Dreamweaver to create web pages and manage a web site
- Learn basic HTML and CSS
- Use Photoshop to prepare images for the web
- Create a simple static web site with a gallery(s) to showcase your artistic work.
- Publish your website to a server.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a beginner's class, but you will need to be computer literate at a basic level. Please note that you will be using Apple Macs, not PCs, although all the software used on this course is cross platform.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through a carefully structured programme of lectures, demonstrations, discussions, guidance notes, and through the development of your own website. The digital arts studio also uses a computer projector for step-by-step instructions. Each student will have their own workstation, all of which are on-line.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Nothing needs to be bought before the course starts. CD-R's can be purchased from the college for saving completed work during any class.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will produce practical work which will also indicate your progress, as will your folio for the Cambridge validation.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Further computer courses on offer at City Lit such as intermediate Photoshop and Flash, using our digital arts open access facility for further work or specialist courses in the digital arts studio.
