This course involves a walk between several small galleries in London’s East End. Each week we will see different exhibitions and a variety of contemporary art. We will gather information, make sketches and notes and then discuss the exhibitions and review the sketchbook work. One week will incorporate a visit to a working artist’s studio.
The course will cover different methods of sketching and information gathering, while responding to the work of contemporary artists in a gallery setting.
1) Look at, and take inspiration directly from, the work of a variety of contemporary artists in a gallery situation and in a working artist’s studio.
2) Build up a sketchbook for research, using a variety of methods for gathering visual information.
3) Know more about cutting edge contemporary art practice and a range of East London's small independent galleries (including where they are!).
4) Feel more confident with drawing in public spaces.
Suitable for all levels; you need to have a willingness to go on a tour of discovery and an interest in experiencing contemporary art.
Talks, practical work, demonstrations, individual tutoring and group discussion.
Some basic drawing materials eg pencils, rubbers, sharpeners will be provided.
You will need to bring an A4 (minimum size) sketchbook, and may like to bring any extra optional drawing materials, such as coloured pencils, pens or a camera.
