Artists have always drawn from the art of the past, looking for inspiration, in order to re-create the present. This is your chance to draw from the paintings in the National Gallery, with supportive and expert tuition. The National Gallery, in Trafalgar square, houses one of the greatest collections of paintings in the world, including examples from early European Renaissance art up to Modernist masters. Through careful study, the mysteries of how a painting has been constructed can be opened up, giving us the possibility to ‘enter into the minds of the artists’.
We will be considering the ways in which paintings are constructed, thinking about the way painterly style, composition, tone colour and other formal concerns are used to drive a narrative or create atmosphere. We will be drawing from painting, both in whole and fragments, from different periods of art.
- Make informed and personalised drawings from the work of others.
- Explore drawing as a skill and an expressive language.
- Appreciate art of the past, and its relationship to modern and contemporary art.
- Examine paintings for their technical qualities.
All levels, with little or no experience required. The emphasis is on personal skills and individual development.
The course shall explore the paintings through a combination of both practical work, drawing in the gallery with one-to-one tuition, with a series of weekly gallery talks to begin each session.
You will need to purchase at least the following materials:
- Artist's sketchbook (A3 size)
- Drawing pencils (selection)
- Putty rubber
- Pencil sharpener.
No.
