Course outline

What is the course about?

The course is about how to use a sketchbook as a forum for collecting visual information, experimenting with a variety of drawing materials, exploring mixed media techniques and formulating and recording ideas.

What topics will we cover?

The first day will be split into two. In the morning session, based in the art room, we will work from observation on a series of short drawing exercises, investigating drawing methods and approaches. In the afternoon, we will be sketching in the British Museum. Direction and advice from the tutor will be available on site throughout the afternoon. On day two, we will explore composition and selection of format, the use of different tools, and the extension of drawing media by way of collage, cut-outs, found objects and photocopies.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Collect visual information in a sketchbook
- Use sketchbook notes as secondary source material for further studies based on line, tone and texture
- Identify the use of a variety of drawing media and techniques
- Explore an idea / sketch that extends your ability through the use of various mixed-media approaches
- Begin to use a sketchbook as a tool for developing ideas and as a stimulus for new work.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Mixed level. Basic drawing skills would be an advantage.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Examples of sketchbooks will be shown. Demonstrations of methods and techniques will be given. There will also be practical exercises, handouts, one-to-one discussion and tuition, and informal group presentations and reviews.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring an A4 hardback sketchbook and any drawing media you may have, to the first session. You will need a variety of materials, to be advised during the course.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

The sketchbook course is designed to help you explore and develop your own initiatives through drawing and mixed-media, and paves the way for further development in the visual arts, such as drawing, painting, textiles and 3D work.
