Course outline

What is the course about?

•To explore the painted portrait or clothed seated figure.
•To work from a long pose.
•To explore and understand composition.
•To produce a sustained painting/mixed media or a number of paintings/drawings/mixed media.
•To explore/discuss the possibilities of various media, surface, use of mark and colour.

What topics will we cover?

We will look at, and discuss the possible visual languages of, the painted portrait, from realism and naturalism through to expressionism and ’bad painting’. We will also consider composition and scale, as well as analytical and expressive painting and drawing.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• Have some understanding of the nature and possibilities of portraiture
• Start to develop the concentration required to work from a long pose
• Understand the process needed to produce a sustained painting/mixed media or a number of paintings/drawings/mixed media
• Start articulating the reasons for your chosen medium, composition and language/style, showing an ability to assess your own work
• Critique your, and fellow students', aims and objectives, through an analysis of work in progress and the final portraits.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For intermediate and advanced students - some experience of drawing and painting will be required.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

•A series of projects
•Group seminars and crits
•Individual tutorials dependent on each student's aims and objectives.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to provide the support you wish to work on if it is other than hardboard or paper.

NB. If you want to work on canvas, plywood or MDF, please bring in a ready made (or handmade) surface/support. Ready made canvases can be bought.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
