Depicting the human figure has fascinated people and has been a theme in art since the earliest cave paintings. Learning methods of painting the human figure, this course will help you build confidence in painting the nude and clothed model. The figure in a setting will also be explored.
The course will cover aspects of figure painting and the means to deal with it: modelling of form; dealing with proportion and scale; issues of the figure in space - perspective and foreshortening and emotional mood. The model will be posed both nude and clothed.
• begin to represent the figure in painterly terms
• have an expanded sense of paint handling and technique
• understand the figure in terms of its basic structures
• use a limited palette to create a range of flesh colours and tones.
This is a beginner level course but it would be helpful though not essential for students to have some experience of life drawing.
Talks, practical work, demonstrations, individual tutoring, group discussion.
A variety of poses will be used (lying, standing, sitting) with different moods, using techniques that both free up handling but also develop control, from exercises to quick sketches to more considered pieces. It is possible in the latter part of the course that a pose will be retained over a number of weeks.
Basic materials are provided.
No.
