Course outline

What is the course about?

This course introduces ways of looking at the structure of the human figure. You will learn about proportion, scale and methods of measurement in figure drawing. We will also look at how to develop a sensitive and sympathetic use of line and tone in relation to describing the human form.

The course aims to help you gain skills of critical appraisal, to become familiar with the approach of selected artists, and to explore a creative response to the figure, as well as imaginative use of technique.

What topics will we cover?

We will explore all of the above through a series of experiments and drawing exercises. The course will encourage an inventive approach to life drawing as well as developing an analytical approach. Projects will vary according to the methodology and interests of each course tutor, however, the underlying core elements that need to be learned will not differ. You will experience working from both short and long poses.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Demonstrate an ability to register the structure of the figure quickly and effectively
- Demonstrate an ability to render the figure in tone
- Look at, and take inspiration from, the work and practice of a variety of artists
- Work with a range of poses
- Draw the figure using line.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Life classes are suitable for students who have some previous drawing experience.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Tutors will give presentations, demonstrations and develop discussion. You will work both individually and in groups.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The course fee includes most materials. Extra materials may be purchased from the tutor at cost. Some equipment will be available for use in the studio. The library keeps a comprehensive stock of art books and membership is free to enrolled students.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
