Course outline

What is the course about?

A chance to find out about, and improve your understanding of, this fascinating genre, through practical drawing and painting tasks in and/or outside the studio. The course provides an introduction to portraiture through drawn/painted representations of a model, exploration of artists' work though a gallery visit, with an accompanying assignment, and an investigation of the technical and expressive possibilities of portraiture.

What topics will we cover?

We will explore technical approaches for representing the human head and make selections of varied compositions, lighting setups and viewpoints. We will apply such skills to an exploration of expressive possibilities within portraiture using a range of media and techniques.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Represent the human head in two dimensional media using a variety of techniques
- Select, compose and edit visual information in a drawn or painted portrait/self-portrait
- Investigate and respond to an artist’s use of expressive elements in portraiture.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Though some drawing experience is preferable, beginners who will enjoy a challenge are welcome.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Practical 2d projects in drawn/ painted media. Group discussion and evaluation. Case study of a chosen artist's work. Drawing/painting from observation.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All materials provided, though an A4 sketchbook to keep a record of course assignments and make notes/ sketches is recommended.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
