Course outline

What is the course about?

This life painting workshop focuses on the surface of the body and the subtle colours within the skin. You will make a series of paintings from the torso whilst exploring rich and surface-based approaches to colour-mixing.

What topics will we cover?

- Observational painting from abstracted areas of the body.
- How to mix and layer colour using acrylic painting techniques.
- How to mix colour using 'wet-in-wet' oil painting techniques.
- How a range of artists use paint to represent the surface of the body.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Produce a series of observational studies of torsos in acrylic and in oils.
- Use colour with increased sensitivity to mixing on the surface of the painting.
- Experience an imaginative connection between the body, landscape and painting.
- Paint from life and from observation with greater sensitivity and confidence.
- Understand colour and paint in artists’ work more deeply, and how artists use paint.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should have experienced at least one life class and/or completed an 'introduction to painting' course.
You will need:
- a willingess to follow a systematic approach to painting
- a desire to develop your observational ability through colour.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

A mixture of tutor-led demonstrations, working directly from the life model, practical exercises and references to artists.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No additional costs – all paint provided.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
