What is the course about?

Learn how to use a sewing machine and develop skills for use in dressmaking. We will make fabric samples using various methods for seams, zips, darts, waistband and hems. Help and advice will be at hand to guide you.

What topics will we cover?

With individual use of a Bernina sewing machine, the tutor will guide you through basic sewing techniques used in dressmaking.

Seams will include plain, zigzag, and French, darts; zips , plus waistband and hems. Pressing and finishing will also be covered. You will have the opportunity to practise on samples.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Use a sewing machine.
- Press and finish all the samples you have made.
- Use practical sewing skills for making seams and darts.
- Put in a zip.
- Sew on a waistband.
- Sew hand and machine hems.
- Produce a range of sewing samples for future reference.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory course for beginners where you will learn the basic sewing machine skills and sewing techniques used in dressmaking.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstrations, handouts, individual tuition, group discussion and practical work.
Work can be continued outside of the lesson.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Bring a notebook and pencil, and sewing equipment such as fabric scissors, tape measure and pins if you have them. Basic materials are provided and you will be advised on what other items you need to purchase between sessions or to bring in.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
