Learn how to use a sewing machine and develop skills for use in dressmaking. We will make fabric samples using various methods for seams, zips, darts, waistband and hems. Help and advice will be at hand to guide you.
With individual use of a Bernina sewing machine, the tutor will guide you through basic sewing techniques used in dressmaking.
Seams will include plain, zigzag, and French, darts; zips , plus waistband and hems. Pressing and finishing will also be covered. You will have the opportunity to practise on samples.
- Use a sewing machine.
- Press and finish all the samples you have made.
- Use practical sewing skills for making seams and darts.
- Put in a zip.
- Sew on a waistband.
- Sew hand and machine hems.
- Produce a range of sewing samples for future reference.
This is an introductory course for beginners where you will learn the basic sewing machine skills and sewing techniques used in dressmaking.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

Work can be continued outside of the lesson.
Bring a notebook and pencil, and sewing equipment such as fabric scissors, tape measure and pins if you have them. Basic materials are provided and you will be advised on what other items you need to purchase between sessions or to bring in.

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

You could move on to 'Dressmaking 2' or there are courses in textiles in which you could learn how to embroider, knit, or print, as techniques which could be used to embellish garments or other items.
