Course outline

What is the course about?

You will learn how to achieve a professional finish through making fabric samples of a pocket, collar, sleeve and buttonholes. You will have the opportunity to practise on samples or to make up part of a sample size shirt within the class using a pattern provided by the tutor.

What topics will we cover?

With individual use of a Bernina sewing machine, the Tutor will guide you through more advanced sewing techniques which can be used in clothing. These will include applied pockets, a shirt collar, set-in sleeves, cuffs and machine buttonholes. Also, pressing and finishing. You will have the opportunity to practise on samples or to make up part of a sample size shirt within the class, using techniques learnt.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Understand how to sew an applied pocket
- Know how to make up a shirt collar
- Sew sleeves and cuffs
- Use practical sewing skills for buttonholes
- Press and finish articles
- Have produced a range of sewing samples for future reference.
- Show an understanding of how clothes are made.
- Demonstrate improved skills in the making of clothes.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Intermediate level. For students who have completed Introduction to Sewing, Clothes making Intensive 1, or Beginners skills for clothes making or those with some experience already, who will continue to develop further sewing techniques.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through demonstrations, discussions, workshop practice, one to one instruction and guidance. Some tasks may need to be undertaken at home in order to be completed.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Bring a notebook and pencil, tape measure, fabric scissors if you prefer. Basic materials are provided or can be purchased/ brought in. Bring your garment for practice to the second session.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
