Course outline

What is the course about?

If you have learnt the basics of making felt or you are an experienced felt maker wanting to learn new skills and broaden your knowledge of the subject then this is the course for you. Learn about the traditions and contemporary uses of felt and generate new ideas and techniques for personal projects.

What topics will we cover?

There will be a presentation of traditional and contemporary felts from around the world to deepen your knowledge of the subject; its properties and applications.

You will be encouraged to build upon your existing skills, which will vary from person to person. There will be a chance in the first session to discuss an individual plan of learning to suit you. You will be able to develop your own project through simple research exercises and themes and will be encouraged to keep a sketchbook to help develop ideas and record your interests.

There will be demonstrations of a number of processes including making 3D hollow forms and moulding the felt to make a wide variety of items from sculptural pieces to functional items such as bags and home accessories.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- develop an awareness of traditional and contemporary uses of felt
- explore personal projects and techniques to develop an individual body of work
- make 3D hollow felt and mould around a form.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for intermediate and advanced students. It is for students who have some knowledge of basic felting processes and wish to develop their skills and /or personal projects.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to make basic measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will be hands on with demonstrations by the tutor, handouts, individual tuition and informal group discussions. The use of a sketchbook to record your thoughts and develop your work will be encouraged and basic research methods discussed. There will be recommendations for books and information on current exhibitions that you can visit in your own time. You will learn how to use tools, equipment, and materials safely in the workshop.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic materials will be provided but if you are working on a large-scale project you will be asked to purchase wool fibres. You may bring your own materials if you wish.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?
