Course outline

What is the course about?

This course is about exploring techniques associated with hand made felt to make creative jewellery. If you have never made either felt or jewellery, welcome to this exciting area combining simple elements from both disciplines to create your own innovative designs. If you do have experience of either felt making or jewellery, here’s your chance to expand your knowledge and add another element to your technical and creative skills.

What topics will we cover?

Beginners: You will learn basic felt making techniques to make felt balls and colour rolls for use as components in bead threading, and learn to felt wire to create decorative shapes. Use of simple tools to attach clasps and manipulate wire posts will be demonstrated.

Intermediate or Advanced in either felt making or jewellery techniques: Build upon your existing skills, and add another. Part of the first session of the course will be dedicated to working out an individual plan of learning to allow you to broaden your range of techniques and design your own project.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

As a beginner to Felt Making you should be able to:

- make solid felt balls and rope to use as components in a piece of jewellery
- make seamless felt rings, chains and wired shapes
- produce a range of experimental felt jewellery samples and some resolved pieces

As a beginner to jewellery techniques you should be able to:
- use simple bead threading techniques to join small felt components together
- use simple tools to attach clasps and manipulate wire posts to complete a piece of jewellery

As an intermediate or advanced student you can:
- experiment with new approaches
- realise your designs by combining the two disciplines
- achieve a high standard of design and craftsmanship.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for all levels. No experience of either felting or jewellery is necessary. This course would however be of interest to experienced jewellers and / or felt makers who are interested in building imaginative bridges between the two disciplines.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will be hands on with demonstrations by the tutor, handouts, individual tuition and informal group discussions. The use of a sketchbook to record your thoughts and develop your work will be encouraged and basic research methods discussed. There will be recommendations for books and information on current exhibitions that you can visit in your own time. You will learn how to use tools, equipment, and materials safely in the workshop.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic materials are provided but you may wish to bring your own beads and jewellery findings after the first session and with guidance and discussion with the tutor.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
