Course outline

What is the course about?

If you want to get involved in designing for yourself, gain confidence with using different media and experimenting with lots of design ideas then this practical course is for you. This would suit anyone who wants to work in textiles and basketry but it would also be useful too within any other craft area like ceramics or jewellery.

You will be using practical work to explore some of the materials and elements that are essential to any creative design. You will work in both 2D and 3D to produce a variety of samples, experiments and design ideas and develop a sketchbook that relates to the work produced. You will also look at how designers and makers incorporate these principles into their work and how you could do the same.

What topics will we cover?

Throughout the course you will look at what we mean by and how to use; colour, tone, line, texture, scale, surface, shape and form. Sometimes elements will be looked at on their own but often you will be using them in combinations ie colour and texture or form and texture.

You will be introduced to a range of materials including inks, acrylic paints, oil pastels, cane, wire, plastic and mixed media.

Techniques will include, colour mixing, mark making, manipulating paper surfaces, composition and 3D structures.
We will look at how artist and designers use these elements within their work and how to use and develop a related sketchbook.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

· Use a sketchbook to record ideas and contextual information
· Use texture and mark making in both 2 and 3D
· Select and use a range of media and materials to design with
· Design using colour and black and white media
· Consider the effects of scale in both 2 and 3D
· Understand the qualities and characteristics of individual materials.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for beginners or people you would like to develop their confidence with design.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to make basic measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught by a combination of group demonstrations, discussions, practical exercises and individual tutorial support.
Your tutors will show you related visual images and samples to help support your understanding and provide lots of variety.

You will be expected to do some work at home which will include things like collecting images to work from or include in your sketchbook, finishing off class work and finding out a little about related artists and designers.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The college will provide most other materials needed but you may want to add to these in order to make you work more personal as the course develops.

You will need to provide a sketchbook no smaller than A4. You may need to photocopy your work during the design process, there is a pay copier in the college. You will need some basic drawing/art materials for work at home.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
