Course outline

What is the course about?

The course is about you making a range of samples that explore and experiment with a variety of textile techniques to produce stitched networks. You will look at the types of lines and space you can create and the effects of layering as well at colour and texture.

The first four sessions will be about trying out different techniques and looking at the effects that can be achieved, leaving the final session for you to choose one or a combination of methods to develop.

We will look at how networks have been used by various artists and designers and consider how your networks could be used either as art work, jewellery or in some other form.

What topics will we cover?

You will learn to use water soluble fabric, work over a metal frame to make corded networks, use the sewing machine to machine to stitch coloured paper networks. We will look at the effect of layering our networks and embellishing them further. We will discuss and explore the effect that colour and density of line has on our structures. Most of the structures will be machine stitched although some hand stitch can be included.

There will be one session at the end for you to develop any of the techniques further or to combine them.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

All students:
- Use soluble fabric to make a network
- Use the sewing machine to make a corded network
- Use of variety of materials, colour and texture in a stitched network
- Explore different types of stitched lines and spaces through networks

More Advanced students:
- Extend and combine the techniques
- Develop more complex networks by layering up the structures.
- Consider the effect of the structures in 2d and 3d form.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for all levels, however, it will be very useful to have some experience of the sewing machine.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will be very practical with demonstrations illustrated with samples and group discussion. Individual project work will follow, supported by the tutor with additional demonstrations and help when needed.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Most materials will be supplied by the college but you can make your work more personal by adding small amounts of materials yourself. Scrap fabric, like sheers, and silks, beads, and threads that you particularly like.

You may like to bring in images that you want to work from for colour or texture. Sketchbooks will be useful to keep notes in and collect your samples in.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre). To find out what may be available to you, and how to apply, see page 213 of the 11/12 course guide, or visit www.citylit.ac.uk/students
