This course will enable you to explore pattern and its possibilities. You will study a broad range of pattern and decoration in the world around us and develop your own designs around a specific theme. The course will encompass motifs, repeats and surface decoration as well as simple methods of interpreting and translating designs on paper and cloth.
You will study basic pattern repeats and their application in the design world; looking at repeats used in fashion, interiors and design. You will make a mood board focused on your theme, from which to direct your own individual design work. You will create your own motifs and use these to develop designs for repeats and borders. The purpose of the design will be considered; designs can be developed on paper for fashion or furnishings, or towards decorating a specific product. You will explore decorative surfaces for papers and cloth and will apply some of these in translating your designs.
- Identify basic pattern repeats
- Create a mood board
- Produce design motifs based on a chosen theme
- Produce a repeat pattern incorporating your design motifs
- Produce a complementary or border design
