Course outline

What is the course about?

The fashion design course aims to give you an understanding of the materials, processes and techniques involved in design of a small collection, with a particular focus on the methods used within the industry. The course will focus upon the development of extensive research critical to understanding the design principles of the fashion process.
You will learn how to illustrate your designs making an abstract concept from your imagination real to other people.

What topics will we cover?

This course is suitable for students wishing to develop their design skills through research and design development. You will learn to research your customer’s profile and target your collection appropriately using different types of layout compositions. You will be introduced to different drawing techniques for representing the human figure in a fashion context and to develop a whole range of related ideas using technical drawings.

You will explore new ways of getting your ideas down on paper by using cutting as a medium to produce creative collages and attractive layouts compositions in both your colour palettes and mood boards.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

Beginners:
- Research ideas from a broad range of inspirations
- Produce a Mood Board
- Produce basic figure drawing and flat drawing
- Develop a basic colour palette and select appropriate fabrics
- Design a well balanced outfit

Intermediate:
- Research and gather ideas from a range of primary and secondary sources
- Prioritise images from your collated research to produce a Mood Board that summarizes your chosen design theme
- Choose the most appropriate style of illustration and flat drawing
- Manipulate fabrics in line with your colour palette and the chosen theme
- Design a fashion collection that is well balanced and innovative.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for beginners and intermediate students, with support given appropriate to your level. An initial assessment will take place at the very beginning of the course to establish your level.

You will be required to follow written and verbal instruction and take part to group discussion with the support of the tutor.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The first stage will introduce you to a range of practical approaches that will enable you to develop a broad understanding of the fashion process from concept to the development of ideas and finally to the consumer. During the second stage the emphasis will be on building your practical skills of drawing related garments ideas to produce a cohesive collection with a strong visual impact and that will emphasize your own unique style.

Teaching will be both in groups and on a one to one basis encouraging the critical development of personal ideas trough discussion and practical exercises. All students can negotiate individual learning goals with the tutor and constant feedback will be given to the students’ work throughout the course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need to bring the following:
A range of 4 graphite pencils: two pencils showing the letter H and two pencils showing the letter B.
Mechanical pencil (0.5 mm), ruler, rubber, masking tape, glue, blue tack, scissors and sketchbook.

Some materials are provided and a detailed list with all further materials needed will be provided on the first day of the course.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?
