Course outline

What is the course about?

• Visual research and developing ideas in a sketchbook and through sampling.
• Developing practical skills in the use of textile materials, processes and equipment.
• Investigation, exploration and discovery.
• Extending knowledge and understanding of textiles as an area of practice.

The course is structured across a year to provide a varied experience but can be taken on a termly basis. Each term has a different focus. This term you will be learning about surface design and mixed media approaches to textiles (please see VX951 for term 2 & VX952 for term 3 content and approaches).

You will be introduced to a variety of techniques using mixed media and will investigate and explore surface, imagery and ideas. Traditional and less conventional textile related materials will be introduced, and you will be shown and have the opportunity to explore various stitch techniques, methods of joining materials and developing imagery.

What topics will we cover?

A broad based project is set every term providing a framework for visual research, exploration into different materials and processes and the development of ideas. Class discussion revolves around individual project work and its’ development and the work of artists using related methods and ideas. Using a sketchbook is part of the course for all levels as it is used to collect imagery, take notes, develop ideas and evaluate your own work.

The focus of this term will be on stitched and mixed media approaches, combining image and surface and working with a range of textile related materials. Working with the set theme you will investigate mixed media textiles using fabrics, paper and other textile related materials. You will be working through practical sampling and developing an individual response to the project brief backed up by developmental and experimental work in sketchbooks. You will be shown and have the opportunity to explore:

• Surface treatments of paper
• Various stitch techniques using both hand and machine.
• Transfer printing.
• Methods of joining including the use of bondaweb.

You will be encouraged to select from and combine techniques and materials to develop your work to produce a collection of samples or a more resolved final piece/s. Outcomes will depends on your level of experience and personal choices.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

For beginners:
• Start using a sketchbook to research and develop ideas.
• Use this research in the development of samples.
• Use a variety of textile related materials and mixed media approaches
• Produce a family of samples using mixed media approaches

For intermediate and advanced learners:
· Refine your use of techniques
· Develop the content of the work
· Produce more resolved work using mixed media approaches.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for all levels; from students relatively new to the area through to more experienced students who want to use the course for further textile development. However, if you are a complete newcomer to textiles (have not used a machine or hand sewing needle before and do not have any art and design experience) you might find it useful to first complete the course VX108 Textiles: basics for beginners, as this will introduce you to the basic principles making it easier to learn further textile techniques within a mixed ability group. The course can be used as a diagnostic experience, to begin to build a portfolio for further study or to explore and develop your own personal approaches to mixed media textiles.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for
health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers
and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be given a written brief, which will be supported, by demonstrations, discussion, and illustration. Tuition will take place individually, with small groups and with the group as a whole. You will be introduced to different methods each week for the first few weeks and will then decide which methods are appropriate to your ideas and which methods you would like to take forward. The last few sessions are focused on the development of personal work within the project brief.

This is an intensive course requiring motivation and commitment and you will be expected to work outside of the class to get the full benefit of the course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic materials are covered in the fees. You will need to supplement this with other materials; fabrics, papers, threads etc to suit specific needs or preference and to provide variation. You should have a sketchbook with you for every session.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

Students successfully completing the course should have the confidence to continue developing their work on other courses. There are a range of textile courses at the City lit including an Advanced Course aimed at developing independent practice.
