Course outline

What is the course about?

• Visual research and developing ideas in a sketchbook and through sampling.
• Learning practical skills in the use of stitch techniques to structure and manipulate materials.
• Investigation, exploration and discovery.
• Extending knowledge and understanding of textiles as an area of practice.

The course can be used as a diagnostic experience, to begin to build a portfolio for further study or to explore and develop your own textiles working to a brief.

The course is structured across a year to provide a varied experience but can be taken on a termly basis. Each term has a different focus. This term you will be learning about stitch, structure, and manipulation approaches to textiles. (Please see VX950 for term 1 and VX952 for term 3 content and approaches).

Working with a set theme you will investigate textile structures and use stitch and fabric manipulation techniques taking your ideas and techniques through practical sampling to individual project work.

What topics will we cover?

A broad based project is set every term providing a framework for visual research, exploration into different materials and processes and the development of ideas. Class discussion revolves around individual project work and its’ development and the work of artists using related methods and ideas. Using a sketchbook is part of the course for all levels as it is used to collect imagery, take notes, develop ideas and evaluate your own work.

The focus of this term will be on producing manipulated structures and surfaces, using a variety of techniques individual to this terms programme. Working with the set theme you will investigate manipulated textiles through practical sampling and the development of an individual response to the project brief backed up by developmental
and experimental work in sketchbooks. You will be shown and have the opportunity to explore:

• Surface treatments of fabric using manipulation techniques.
• Various structural stitch techniques using both hand and machine.

You will be encouraged to select from and combine techniques and materials to develop your work to produce a collection of samples or a more resolved final piece/s. Outcomes will depends on your level of experience and personal choices.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• Use a sketchbook to research and develop ideas.
• Interpret this research in sketchbooks and through samples.
• Use a variety of textile materials together with stitch and manipulation techniques.
• Identify the properties of material and techniques used.
• Produce resolved textile work from your own visual research using stitch and manipulation techniques.

More experienced students will be able to
· Refine your use of techniques
· Develop the content of the work
· Produce more resolved work using stitch and manipulation approaches.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for all levels; from students relatively new to the area through to more experienced students who want to use the course for further textile development. However, if you are a complete newcomer to textiles (have not used a machine or hand sewing needle before and do not have any art and design experience) you might find it useful to first complete the course VX108 Textiles: basics for beginners, as this will introduce you to the basic principles making it easier to learn further textile techniques within a mixed ability group.  Please see the prospectus or contact Visual Arts for more information.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to make basic measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This is an intensive course requiring motivation and commitment and you will be expected to work outside of the class to get the full benefit of the course.

You will be given a written brief, which will be supported, by demonstrations, discussion, and illustration. Tuition will take place individually, with small groups and with the group as a whole. You will be introduced to different methods each week for the first few weeks and will then decide which methods are appropriate to your ideas and which methods you would like to take forward. The last few sessions are focused on the development of personal work within the project brief.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic materials are covered in the fees. You will need to supplement this with other materials; fabrics, papers, threads etc to suit specific needs or preference and to provide variation. You should have a sketchbook with you for every session.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?

You may be interested in: education and careers advice; financial and childcare support; disability support; support for Deaf and hearing-impaired students; dyslexia support; English and maths support; counselling, and library services (supported learning centre).
