This course will enable you to:
- explore your creative potential
- develop your textile ideas and current practice to a higher level
- be inspired to incorporate new ways of working.
The course is designed to enable intermediate and advanced textile students to expand on current textile practice, explore new ways of working and learn new skills with tutor support and guidance and independent study. You will have the chance to further your ideas and build on techniques within a framework which places an emphasis on the individual artist / maker / designer.
Employing a variety of visual research methods, and responding to creative and technical challenges, the course will enable you to develop the potential of your work and establish a strong working practice.
The course is taught over three terms in blocks of 4 taught Saturday sessions, with four weeks between for independent study, which will allow for personal development of your work.
Each term will involve 2 blocks of 4 taught Saturdays. In terms 2 and 3 you will also be asked to attend two Friday evenings; 24 Feb and 25 May (18.00-21.00) which will be used for professional practice, contextual studies, planning and discussion.
The first two terms will have a broad-based theme from which to develop your work. In term three, you will work to a self-planned project, leading to a profile exhibition, which you will organise with the other members of the group.
The focus of the course is on developing your ideas and approaches to your practice. There will be an initial research project to help you find a basis for your work and extend your understanding of, and approach to, research methods.
We will introduce techniques in the areas of print, stitch, constructed and mixed-media textiles to help you build on your current skills and refine your approach to a variety of textile media. You will be encouraged to select methods to take forward and to increasingly define your own direction.
You will be introduced to the work of various makers, artists and designers and will discuss this within different contexts. You will plan and participate in a portfolio profile exhibition, giving you experience of showing your work and of planning, organising and promoting a group show.

- Evaluate your progress and results.
- Demonstrate contextual understanding
- Initiate and develop a personal project brief
- Produce a personal body of work

- Stage a profile exhibition of personal work as part of the group show.
The course is aimed at intermediate and advanced students who have some experience of textile media and processes and who are seeking to further develop their current skills and establish more independence in their practice.
You may have completed the Textile Course 1, or have other experience of textiles and be looking to use the course for personal development, to refresh skills and ideas or to build a body of work for exhibition or application to college.
You need to be familiar with using a sketchbook to document, record and develop ideas.
An informal advisory session and portfolio check is needed for entry to the course; these are a chance for you to get all the information you need and for us to ensure that the level is right for you.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussions. You should be able to use numbers and understand basic measurements.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help to you take part fully in this class.
You will be taught by a small team of specialist textile tutors through a series of structured tutorials, group discussions, seminars, practical demonstrations, small projects and museum and gallery visits. The course is designed to enable you to develop your independent practice and you will be expected to maintain a focussed and self-directed approach to your work between sessions; this will include conducting research, planning your projects, producing samples and developing resolved works.
Basic materials will be provided but you will be required to buy and bring with you specialist items and materials which are relevant to the development of your work. You will need to bring a sketchbook to the first session.
Yes. Before you can enrol on this course, you need to have an advisory interview with the relevant department. Without this the enrolment team will be unable to process your enrolment. Please contact the department to arrange your interview, or to find out about drop-in sessions.
