Course outline

What is the course about?

You will gain experience with concepts and techniques in using Adobe Illustrator through a series of demonstrations and practical hands-on activities. You will explore a range of the software’s tools and commands to produce a variety of illustrative designs.

What topics will we cover?

- Introduction to Illustrator environment, concepts and terms.
- Utilise the main tools and commands of the program.
- Differentiate between vector objects and bitmaps.
- Understand the concepts behind ‘paths’ and how they work.
- Create, edit and manipulate vector objects.
- Confidently create illustrations based upon simple geometric shapes.
- Utilise the Pen tools to create more complex illustrative forms.
- Apply colour fills and colour strokes to vector objects.
- Work with special effects and filters.
- Incorporate text creatively into your work.
- Use the Transform commands to manipulate and distort objects.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Create basic drawings and designs using Adobe Illustrator.
- Create illustrations based upon simple geometric shapes.
- Utilise the Pen tools to create more complex illustrative forms.
- Apply colour fills and strokes.
- Apply special effects and filters to your artwork.
- Incorporate text into your work.
- Use the transformation tools to manipulate shapes.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No previous knowledge of Illustrator is required but you will need some experience using the Apple Mac or, if PC based, using creative software on a PC.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course consists of practical exercises, mini-tasks, discussions and demonstrations. Mini-tasks will be supported by one-to-one tuition where necessary.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
