» Find another course in Visual arts» Search all coursesGraphic design is the art of visual communication. This course provides the opportunity to explore the stages, from initial design brief through all the processes involved in reaching a creative visual solution. There is an emphasis on researching, generating and visualising ideas, methods of realising those ideas, and the technical knowledge to transform them into real projects.
An introduction to basic design, typography and the creative use of text and image. Visual research plays an important part in graphic design. You will gain experience and understanding of the design process and visual problem solving. The course will involve presenting and discussing ideas as an essential part of the process. Each week a different aspect of design is explored, with specific design projects complementing each lesson. Although this is not a computer course in graphic design, some use of computers may be included.
- Describe the working processes involved in being a graphic designer, through practical experience, discussion and presentation.
- Demonstrate an ability to realise graphic design solutions using a range of methods and materials.
- Build a bank of information, visual ideas and processes in sketchbook form.
- Achieve a range of designs in portfolio form.
For complete beginners, those who have little experience and those who would like to try a different way of working. You are encouraged to bring an A4 sized pad, pencils and a set of coloured pens to make notes and keep a visual record of the projects set. An A4 size portfolio is required later in the course to contain the design work.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
Teaching methods will include visual presentations, group discussion, individual tuition demonstrations and practical work. Information on the use of computers may be included in the course for students who are unfamiliar with graphic programmes. You are encouraged to complete assignments outside the class.
Please bring an A4 plain paper sketchpad.
A copy of 'Graphic Design, a Concise History' by Richard Hollis (Thames and Hudson World of Art series) is useful but not essential.
No.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. Projects are assessed on a weekly basis.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
