Course outline

What is the course about?

This short course is designed for anyone wanting to make beaded jewellery using single thread, bead-weaving techniques. The course will begin with an introduction to the materials, tools and stitches used in making beaded jewellery, then you will design and make an embellished cuff bracelet or necklace using single thread needle-weaving. You will have the option of making a piece of embellished jewellery using a variety of small glass beads.

What topics will we cover?

You will make a beaded bracelet or necklace using seed beads. You will learn how to choose the right beads and threads, how to knot between beads, to attach clasps and how to manipulate peyote and other stitches. You will also learn about combining beadweaving with traditional jewellery making techniques to add colour and dimension. You will then have the opportunity to implement these methods to make a piece/pieces of jewellery to your own design.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• produce one or two beaded cuff bracelets or necklaces based on the peyote stitch
• tie off and add on threads to change the size of the weave
• add embellishments
• add fringes
• create designs for jewellery made by the single thread weaving techniques
• combine beadweaving with traditional jewellery-making techniques.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for all levels. Beginners will learn basic stitches; intermediate beaders something more ambitious.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through demonstration, advice and guidance, photographic examples of jewellery and technical notes, as appropriate.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All basic materials will be provided, however, if you already have beads of your own or wish to bring some to the class, you will be able to include them in your designs. If you wish to combine beads with precious metal, you will have to provide your own.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
