Course outline

What is the course about?

The course aims to show you a mix of beaded jewellery techniques in order for you to create your own personal jewellery.

What topics will we cover?

You will start with the basic techniques used to make necklaces, bracelets and earrings using beads, wire and findings. Then you will learn how to knot between beads/pearls with thread or ribbons. You will progress onto using beads to knit, crochet, and french-knit or macramé a piece of jewellery from wire or thread. Finally, you will learn how to use bead weaving techniques and how to twist wire to make corsages, tiaras, earrings and bracelets.
Design principles and colour harmonizing will also be taught and examples of contemporary and historical beaded jewellery will be used for inspiration.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

- Make jewellery using beads, wire and findings
- Knot between beads and/or pearls with thread or ribbons
- Use knit, and/or crochet to make jewellery from wire or thread
- Make jewellery using bead weaving and wire twisting techniques
- Apply colour theory and the example of historical beaded jewellery to your designs.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for all abilities.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, handouts and for health and safety information, and will be able to take part in group discussions. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught by demonstration, one to one tutorials and group discussion as well as with handouts.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Tools and equipment: Supplied by City Lit.

Materials: We supply wire, thread, beads and findings for you experiment with the techniques taught. However, the beads provided are limited in colour, shape and material and you will be recommended to buy your own beads and findings as you progress. The tutor will give you advice on suppliers and types of beads.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
