The course is about developing design and drawing skills and is specifically aimed at those involved in making jewellery.
We will start with 2D line drawing, exploring tension and relaxation, symmetry and asymmetry, concentration, optical balance etc. This will be followed by some exercises, i.e. “wire drawing”. Then we will generate several sketches of plants as well as architecture, from where we will move on to stylizing and abstracting. At the end of day one everybody should have several ideas/designs for jewellery.
During the second day we will develop a small jewellery collection from your favourite design from day one. We will also learn how to construct plan drawings in order to be clear about how your pieces would look from different angles and to be able to start producing these pieces after the course.
- Find inspiration for designing your own jewellery through doodling, nature and architectural studies
- Generate two- and three dimensional sketches with pencil and/or ball point pen
- Design your own jewellery collection
- Construct plan drawings of your jewellery.
The course is suitable for beginners, but would also act as a refresher course that builds on skills for more experienced students.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.
You will be taught through demonstration and short projects, supported by hand-outs covering information related to session activity. There won’t be any work outside the class necessary, but if you wanted to, you could try to produce a few more designs before the second day of the course.
You should bring in pencils and a sketchbook. All other drawing materials will be provided.
No.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
