Course outline

What is the course about?

Experiment with materials and form, to develop a new male language for your jewellery. These designs could range from the commercial to the experimental.

What topics will we cover?

We will start by identifying, questioning and breaking down the stereotypical beliefs underlying male jewellery offered by the industry.
You will then choose a target group, find attributes for them and describe them. This will be followed by some exercises, i.e. what materials would you like to use and work with.

For homework you will question men from your target group about the jewellery they would like to wear.

During the second day you will generate sketches for male jewellery that draw on your research. How does your jewellery communicate your target group's taste, desires and dreams?
We will talk about where jewellery can be worn on the body. You will take this into consideration when finding the best way for each piece to be worn. At the end of day two, you should have several ideas/designs for jewellery.

On the third day you will develop a small jewellery collection from your favourite designs. You will make models
in paper or other materials in order to be clear about how your pieces would look in 3D and to be able to start producing these pieces once the course is finished.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

· Identify beliefs underlying the male jewellery industry
· Describe a male target group
· Identify materials for your collection
· Generate two dimensional sketches of designs in pencil and/or ball point pen
· Make 3-dimensional models of designs.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for beginners in the subject of jewellery design and would also act as a refresher course for those with experience. You should come with some jewellery making skills as you will need to refer to these when designing your collection.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, handouts and for health and safety information, and will be able to take part in group discussions. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through demonstrations and photographic examples of jewellery for men and interesting contemporary designers that make/ wear contemporary male jewellery.
Support and advice by the tutor will be given throughout the whole course. You will have to do some simple research outside the class. If you wanted to, you could try to produce a few more designs before the third day of the course.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You should bring a sketchbook in which to develop your ideas. Plasticene, paper and glue will be provided for model making. If you wish to work in other materials, you will need to provide them.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
