Course outline

What is the course about?

You will begin with an introduction to the tools used in making beaded jewellery and then move on to making beaded necklaces, pendants and earrings using wire and beads. You will be encouraged to develop your own ideas and designs. As you progress, the tutor will aim through further demonstrations to help you develop skills appropriate to your personal interests.

What topics will we cover?

You will learn how to knot between beads, attach clasps, how to manipulate wire in order to twist around beads and how to manipulate wire in order to make pendants and earrings. You will learn the use of nylon thread, how to make head pins and eye pins and how to tie and twist beads onto wire using a variety of methods.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• manipulate wire in order to make pendants and earrings
• understand how to knot between beads
• attach clasps and make head pins and eye pins
• tie and twist wire onto beads
• make jewellery to your own design.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For beginners, or for those with experience in making jewellery using metals but not with beads.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through demonstration, advice and guidance, photographic examples of jewellery and technical notes, as appropriate.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic materials will be provided. However, please feel free to bring along beads of your own choice.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

No.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.

How do I find out if I can get some support for my learning?
