As the name implies, this course will give you a taste of jewellery-making. Whether you have always wanted to have a go, or simply want to try it out, this is the course for you.
This course will introduce you to the main work areas in the jewellery studio. There will a simple technique-based project that will allow you to safely explore these. Some machinery along with basic hand tools will be used.
• be aware of health and safety implications in the working area
• practise a particular metal technique
• anneal, cut, file and clean, polish and/or finish metal
• use one or two pieces of larger equipment
• possibly take away a finished piece, but more likely know how to finish a piece.
Aimed mainly at complete beginners, or people who have had a little experience and want a refresher of the workshop.
Whatever your jewellery-making ability, you should come to the first session able to follow verbal and written instructions in English. This is so that you can work safely in the workshop. You should also be able to measure length and add numbers. Please contact the 'Skills for learning and Life' team on 020 7492 2511 if you need help in obtaining these skills before you come to class.
Largely through examples of work, demonstration and hand-outs in an open group enviroment. You can expect to be taught as a group, but with individual tuition where nessecary. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions.
City Lit provides most of the basic tools and equipment you will need for jewellery-making. We also provide basic materials in reasonable quantities, such as base metals (copper, gilding metal, etc.) and other materials (paper, enamel, etc.). We do not provide precious metals such as silver for this course.
No.
You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
Please complete the evaluation form at the end of your course. These are monitored and help us to continually improve our courses.
